How Does a Pad-Mounted Transformer Work?

 

 

 

You may see these green ‘boxes’ or pad-mounted transformers, on a street corner, behind a business, or even in your back yard. Their role in power distribution is extremely important. Do you know how does the pad mounted transformer work?

What are they?

Single phase pad mounted transformer: The transformer inside this “box” steps down voltage from the utility level, usually 8,000 volts, to 120/240 volts, or a secondary voltage. This is the voltage at which customers can use the power in their homes. To send power to a residence, secondary cables are installed from the 120/240 volt side of the transformer and run underground to a customer’s house. These transformers primarily serve residential customers and other small, single-phase loads such as streetlights, traffic signals and signs.

Three phase pad mounted transformer: These transformers are in a much larger green metal ‘box’. Here, the voltage steps down from utility level, usually 13,800 volts, to a lower voltage, usually 415/240 volts or 480/277 volts. The power is now usable for customers. Secondary cables are installed, usually by the customer, to connect the secondary side of the transformer to the building. These transformers serve commercial, utility, industrial, even for bitcoin mining customers, who have larger power requirements.

How about the specification of three phase pad mounted transformer?

As we talked before, the pad mounted transformers are look like a green box, but transformers with different standards have different internal structures. For example, we can take the CSA standard and IEEE standard for looking. The left picture is applied for CSA std, the right picture is used for ANSI/IEEE std. The main difference is IEEE std requires a barrier, but CSA std dont. As the bitcoin mining is hot in North America at present, both of CSA std and IEEE std have wide range of applications.

 

                                                 

 

From the mechanical view, the basic configuration of a pad-mounted transformer is HV part and LV part.

These include HV bushings, LV bushings, load break switch, tap changer, pressure relief valve, gauges, also plug-in bayonet fuses.

There are two kinds of pad-mounted transformers, that have different numbers of HV bushings. Loop feed has 6 bushings, which radial feed only has 3 bushings. For more information, please check the following pictures:

 

 

The remaining part is the oil tank, the aluminum winding, silicon core, and ELSP fuses are installed inside the oil tank to form an integration.

For bitcoin mine using, customer require 2500kva, 2600kva, 3000kva and 3750kva most. High voltage will be 12.47kv, 13.8kv, 24.94kv, 34.5kv, but for low voltage 415/240V and 480/277V are very common.

There are many factors will influence the price of three phase pad mounted transformer. Like capacity, high voltage, low voltage, losses, efficiency...etc. Different materials will also influence the price of transformer. Like stainless steel tank is more expensive than mild steel tank, price of vegetable oil is three times than mineral oil, aluminum winding will be more cheaper than cooper winding.

How to install the pad-mounted transformer?

 

A pad-mounted transformer is a locked steel cabinet mounted on a concrete pad. Some will be used above ground, some will be used underground. They are used at service drops to step down a lines primary voltage to a lower voltage. Generally, pad-mounted transformers will be installed in the empty place, to avoid being disturbed. In this way, if you need to install pad-mounted transformer in your backyard, pls dont choose the place where too closed to shrubs and trees.

How does a pad-mounted transformer work?
